A particularly photogenic small city on the Tâmega River in northern Portugal, Amarante sits in deep wine country with a strong café and restaurant scene for its size. It has been part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Music since 2017, and is closely associated with the medieval saint Gundisalvus of Amarante. The town also held off a French assault in the early 19th century, an episode that shaped its local identity.
