This compact city in Portugal's Douro wine country, Lamego sits on the Balsemão River with an unusual concentration of churches for its size, a real café and restaurant scene, and a historic centre with roots predating the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. Legend holds that the first Portuguese Cortes were convened here in 1143, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lamego remains based in the city today.
