This city in central Yunnan known as the heartland of China's tobacco industry — earning the regional title "homeland of Yunnan tobacco" — Yuxi also carries a reputation as a centre of the traditional flower-lantern folk art form. The surrounding highland terrain, where the Ailao Mountains meet the Hengduan ranges, holds several lakes including Fuxian Lake and Xingyun Lake, with rivers running through a landscape of mountains, gorges, and plateau basins. The city lies a short drive south of Kunming.
