Argentina San Martín

Yapeyú

San Martín · Argentina

Yapeyú, a compact village in Argentina's Corrientes province, is known across the country as the birthplace of General José de San Martín (1778–1850), hero of the War of Independence. The site of a Jesuit mission founded in 1627 and destroyed by Brazilian forces in 1817, the town was refounded in 1860 and renamed Yapeyú in 1899. The Arco Trunco stands among its monuments to that history, and the village sits within walking distance of the water.
