A small town in Hesse with a historic half-timbered centre, Wolfhagen carries the official designation "Hans-Staden-Stadt" — named after the German mercenary soldier who lived and worked here and later served Portuguese settlers in South America. The town sits on the German Timber-Frame Road west of Kassel and hosted the Hessentag state festival in 1992, with scenic surroundings and a compact central core of cafés and restaurants.
