Vukovar, a Croatian town on the Danube in eastern Slavonia, holds Croatia's largest river port at the confluence of the Vuka and the Danube, and carries one of the most significant wartime histories in modern Europe. In the early 1990s, roughly 2,000 Croatian civilians and volunteers held the city for three months against a vastly larger Serbian force, leaving it the first European city to be completely devastated since World War II. Vineyards surround the town, and a compact centre offers cafés and restaurants along the riverfront.
