Venta de Baños, a small town in the Palencia province of Castile and León, holds an iconic place in Spanish railway history: built around a station constructed in 1860, it became the most important rail junction in northern Spain, where lines connecting Madrid to Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, France, and Portugal all converged. Generations of travellers passed through its waiting rooms and cafeteria. The town also hosts the Cross Internacional de Venta de Baños, an annual cross-country race that has drawn world-class athletes including Kenenisa Bekele, and is home to a church believed to be Visigothic in origin.
