Founded in 997 as a trading post, Trondheim served as Norway's capital through the Viking Age and remains the site of Nidaros Cathedral, the country's great medieval pilgrimage church. This fjord city on the mouth of the River Nidelva has a dense café and restaurant scene, many historic churches in the centre, and mountain terrain within reach. Home to Rosenborg, Norway's most successful football club, and to major science and technology institutions, it is a city of considerable range for its size.
