Tournai
Belgium
One of Belgium's oldest cities and the first capital of the Frankish Empire, Tournai sits on the river Scheldt in Wallonia with a walkable centre dense with historic churches, including its celebrated Romanesque cathedral. Clovis I was born here, and the city holds the distinction of being the only Belgian city ever controlled by the English throne. A food-and-drink scene fills the centre, and the wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
