Temirtau is an industrial city in central Kazakhstan, known across the region as a major steel-producing centre — the ArcelorMittal (formerly Mittal Steel) plant here exports to more than sixty countries. The city sits on the Nura River and the Samarkand Reservoir, with mountains within reach. Kazakhstan's first cosmonaut, Toqtar Äubäkirov, came from Temirtau, as did the early working life of former president Nursultan Nazarbayev.
