The moulid of Ahmad al-Badawi, held each October at Tanta's historic Ahmadi Mosque, draws over a million visitors to this large Nile Delta city midway between Cairo and Alexandria. Beyond the festival, Tanta is known for its sweet shops and snack industry — particularly roasted chickpeas and the confection Hab El-Aziz — as well as cotton-ginning, oil, soap, and textile production. A major railway junction for the Delta region, the city also hosts Tanta University and a branch of Al-Azhar University.
