At over 1,000 metres elevation, Tamsweg is the highest-situated district administrative centre in Austria — a little market town in the Salzburg Lungau region, close to the Styrian border, with a compact centre holding cafés, restaurants, and an unusual concentration of historic churches for its size. The surrounding alpine terrain offers scenic viewpoints, and the town sits near water with mountains close at hand.
