Takaoka, a city in northwestern Toyama Prefecture, developed as a castle town under Maeda Toshinaga in the early Edo period and later grew into a commercial and industrial centre known for its traditional bronze casting. The craft, called Takaoka doki, remains one of the city's defining industries. The city sits close to mountains and within reach of several UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region, and its centre has a walkable concentration of cafés and restaurants.
