One of France's most ancient towns, Soissons sits on the river Aisne in the Hauts-de-France region, with a walkable centre full of cafés and a strong architectural heritage. The town is known for the episode of the Vase of Soissons following Clovis's conquest in 486, after which he established his capital here; it later served as capital for several Merovingian kings. Medieval landmarks include the abbey of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes, the cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais, and the abbey of Saint-Léger.
