Wedged into a narrow gap between two long mountain ridges where the Durance, Buëch, and Sasse rivers converge, Sisteron has served as the gateway between Provence and the Alps since Roman times, when a bridge here made it a strategic crossing point. The little town has a café and restaurant scene that punches above its size, scenic viewpoints in the surrounding terrain, and a historic core shaped by fortifications and an episcopal presence dating to the 6th century.
