Sinjar
Iraq
A predominantly Yazidi town in northern Iraq, Sinjar sits just south of the Sinjar Mountains, which the Yazidi community considers sacred. On the highest peak of those mountains stands the Chermera temple, known as the Temple of the 40 Men. The surrounding highland terrain, the Syrian border to the west, and the town's position as the centre of Sinjar District give it a frontier character that draws independent travellers.
