This Bulgarian Danube port town sitting at the point where Romania's land border meets the river, Silistra holds a late Roman tomb with rich interior decoration, an Ottoman fortress known as Medzhidi Tabia, and remains of a medieval fortification. The nearby Srebarna Nature Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The town serves as the administrative and cultural centre of its province in Northeastern Bulgaria.
