Shawinigan
Canada
Birthplace of former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, Shawinigan is a Quebec city on the Saint-Maurice River in the Mauricie region, with a compact centre of cafés and restaurants and easy access to surrounding forests, rivers, and lakes. Its identity was built on hydroelectric power — it was once known as Shawinigan Falls — and it now markets itself as a "Cité de l'énergie," or Energy City, with tourism increasingly central to its economy.
