Seiyun, the largest city in Yemen's Hadhramaut Valley, takes its name from a woman who ran a roadside café there for travelling merchants — a fitting origin for a place that still serves as the valley's main hub. The Kathiri Sultan's Palace, built in the 1920s from mud and stone, is the city's most prominent landmark, and Seiyun Airport connects it to the wider region. The ancient mud-brick city of Shibam lies a short distance away.
