This walkable city in Romania's Maramureș region with a centre full of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, Satu Mare sits on the water with mountains visible in the distance. Its history reaches back to the Middle Ages — the city appears in the Gesta Hungarorum as "Zotmar's fort" — and it has since grown into a regional academic, cultural, and business centre with a strong photographic appeal.
