Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa

Guatemala

The Cotzumalhuapa archaeological zone, encompassing pre-Columbian Maya sites including El Baúl and Bilbao, lies within this Pacific Lowlands city in Guatemala's Escuintla department. The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the municipality's economy has long centred on sugar, coffee, rubber, and tropical fruits. The city is also the birthplace of president Carlos Castillo Armas, and its name derives from a Nahuatl phrase meaning "river of weasels" or "river of the rainbow."
