Santa Ana
El Salvador
El Salvador's second city and the wealthiest in the country during the early 20th-century coffee boom, Santa Ana has a walkable centre dense with historic churches and a lively café and restaurant scene. The city sits close to mountains and water, and a Wikivoyage presence signals steady independent traveller interest. Founded by the Maya around the 5th or 6th century and later named Sihuatehuacan by the Nahua, it hosts its main festival, the Fiestas Julias, each July in honour of its patron saint.
