Compact highland town in the Quetzaltenango department of Guatemala, set high in the mountains and formerly known as San Martín Chile Verde. The Laguna de Chicabal, a crater lake, lies a short distance to the south. The town's name combines a reference to its patron saint, Martín de Tours, with a Nahuatl word meaning "grass-covered hill." In 1902 the eruption of the Santa María volcano caused severe damage across much of western Guatemala, including this municipality.
