This waterfront village on the Île de Ré, off the Charente-Maritime coast near La Rochelle, Saint-Martin-de-Ré is home to Vauban's 17th-century fortifications — a citadel, ramparts, and guardhouses designed between 1681 and 1685 — inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The village has an unusually lively café and restaurant scene for its size, sits in wine country, and offers strong photographic appeal along the harbour and fortified walls.
