Safi is an Atlantic-facing Moroccan city with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants, scenic coastal viewpoints, and a long history as Morocco's main sardine-fishing port. The Portuguese held the city from 1488 to 1541, leaving a fortaleza built in 1508, and the city has been a centre of ceramics and weaving for centuries. During the Second World War, it was one of the landing sites for Operation Torch.
