This Red Sea port town in Egypt's Red Sea Governorate, Safaga draws divers to its coral reefs and clear waters, with high-quality dive centres and sites including the shallow reefs at Sharm El Naga nearby. The town is also known for its black sand beaches, said to help treat certain skin and joint conditions, and serves as a ferry hub for crossings to Saudi Arabia during the Hajj season. Phosphate mining and export form the backbone of its economy.
