Huis Bergh, one of the Netherlands' most significant castles, anchors this little Gelderland town on the Dutch-German border, where city rights date to 1379. The castle holds a panel from Duccio's celebrated altarpiece the Maestà and is bordered by the Bergherbos nature reserve. Each December, the Montferland Run draws world-class distance runners — past winners include Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele, and Paula Radcliffe. The border canal Grenskanaal marks the edge of town, with Germany just across the water.
