Rossano
Cosenza · Italy
The Codex Purpureus — one of the oldest illuminated Gospel books in the world and a UNESCO Memory of the World document — is held in Rossano's Diocesan Museum, earning this modest Calabrian town the nickname Città del Codex. Set on a rise above the Gulf of Taranto in southern Italy's Cosenza province, Rossano also has an archbishop's cathedral, a castle, and a history of marble and alabaster quarrying. Two popes were born here, as was the early Christian monk Nilus the Younger.
