Ritto, in Shiga Prefecture, is best known among Japanese horse racing fans as the home of one of the Japan Racing Association's two national training centres, and as the birthplace of celebrated jockey brothers Yutaka Take and Koshiro Take. The city sits in southern Shiga, with the wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites, and developed rapidly after the opening of the Meishin Expressway interchange and Ritto Station on the Biwako Line.
