Piuro
Sondrio · Italy
On 4 September 1618, a catastrophic landslide completely buried the village of Piuro — then part of the Three Leagues — killing between 1,000 and 2,500 people, one of the worst such events in recorded history. Today the municipality survives across several small settlements in the Sondrio province of Lombardy, near the Swiss border, set among mountain scenery and deep wine country, with scenic viewpoints in the surrounding landscape and an unusually lively café and restaurant scene for a village its size.
