This medieval walled village in the Ain department, northeast of Lyon, Pérouges is listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France and carries one of the most heritage-dense streetscapes in the region. Built on a low hill with views toward the Alps and the Bugey mountains, it was historically a weavers' settlement whose double ring of ramparts largely disappeared by the 18th century. The compact old quarter draws a strong café and restaurant scene for a village its size.
