Périgueux, the historic capital of the Périgord region in southwestern France's Dordogne, sits on the Isle river and holds a layered heritage running from Roman foundations — the ancient city of Vesunna, established in the first century BC — through medieval and Renaissance periods. Its cathedral of Saint-Front is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The walkable centre has a well-developed food and drink scene, and the wider Dordogne region is ringed by further UNESCO-listed sites.
