This small Mediterranean coastal town in Castellón, Peníscola sits on a rocky promontory jutting into the sea, giving it strong photographic appeal and scenic views in multiple directions. The old town has a concentration of cafés and restaurants well above what its size would suggest, and the surrounding Costa del Azahar coastline adds beach access. It has held city status since 1707 and has been part of Spain's "most beautiful villages" network since 2013.
