Pazin, the administrative seat of Istria County in west Croatia, sits above a karst sinkhole into which the Pazinčica river disappears — a geological feature that anchors the town's identity as much as its medieval castle, the former residence of the Istrian margraves. The town serves as the cultural and commercial centre of central Istria, with a café and restaurant scene that outpaces the town's size, and UNESCO World Heritage sites within reach in the wider region.
