Parepare, a port city on the southwest coast of Sulawesi, is the birthplace of B. J. Habibie, Indonesia's third president — the most specific distinction this Bugis coastal city carries. Sitting on the Makassar Strait, it has long served as a trading hub connecting Java, Kalimantan, and the Maluku Islands, with the bay offering calm waters along its waterfront. Mountains rise close to the city's eastern edge.
