Ortsevo

Bulgaria

Ortsevo holds the distinction of being the highest permanently inhabited village in Bulgaria and across the Balkans, with its village square sitting well above 1,500 metres in the western Rhodope Mountains. The pocket-sized Muslim Bulgarian community here has maintained year-round life at an elevation that a slightly higher neighbouring village, Chamla, could not sustain. The surrounding region is within reach of mountain terrain and UNESCO World Heritage sites.
