Founded after 1501 by the Bundela Rajput ruler Rudra Pratap Singh as the capital of one of central India's most powerful kingdoms, Orchha sits on the Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh, a short distance from Jhansi. Its palaces and temples from the medieval period remain largely intact, and the compact town has a modest café and restaurant scene alongside scenic river views.
