This mountain city in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Nova Friburgo sits high in the Serra do Mar range roughly a day's drive from the state capital and holds the distinction of being the first town in Brazil settled by Germans — a heritage reflected in its alternative name, Neufreiburg. Known informally as the "Brazilian Switzerland," it is also the coldest city in Rio de Janeiro state, with an economy built around textiles, intimate apparel manufacturing, and tourism.
