New Harmony

Founded in 1814 by German Lutheran separatists under George Rapp, and later purchased by Welsh industrialist Robert Owen for a utopian social experiment, this modest Indiana village on the Wabash River carries an outsized intellectual history. New Harmony's residents established Indiana's first public library and public school system, and the town served as a second headquarters of the U.S. Geological Survey. Restored Harmonist buildings, the modernist Roofless Church, and the Atheneum visitor centre make the historic district a draw for those interested in American reform movements.
