The ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bihar, eastern India, preserve what was once one of the ancient world's great centres of Buddhist learning — operating for nearly a thousand years from 427 CE until around 1400 CE. Established by the Gupta emperor Kumaragupta I, the monastery drew scholars of Mahayana Buddhism from across Asia, including the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang, and taught subjects ranging from philosophy and medicine to mathematics and astronomy.
