Nagyecsed
Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg · Hungary
The ruined castle at Nagyecsed, now largely demolished after the 18th-century Kuruc uprisings, was the childhood home of Elizabeth Báthory and the site of her burial in the family crypt. This pocket-sized town in eastern Hungary's Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county takes its name — meaning "great Ecsed" — from a cadet branch of the Báthory family whose history is woven through the area.
