Laced with canals and bridges along the Loing and several other waterways, Montargis is a walkable town in the Loiret that markets itself as the "Venice of the Gâtinais." The historic centre retains a medieval character, with a 12th-to-15th-century church, a 17th-century convent, and a curved iron footbridge from 1891 among its protected monuments. The surrounding area includes a large forest and farmland where saffron is grown.
