Modica
Ragusa · Italy
Modica's chocolate — made to a pre-industrial recipe with roots in Aztec tradition — is the most distinctive product of this Baroque hill town in Sicily's Hyblaean Mountains. Rebuilt after the catastrophic 1693 earthquake, its historic centre is part of the UNESCO-listed Val di Noto group of late Baroque towns, and its steep streets are lined with churches and places to eat and drink. The town served as capital of a powerful county until the 19th century.
