Meron, a tiny village in the mountains of northern Israel near Safed, stands on the site of ancient Meiron, where excavations have uncovered remains from the Hellenistic and Early Roman periods, including a 3rd-century synagogue. The site has drawn Jewish pilgrims since at least the 13th century CE, reflecting its long history as a religious centre. The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
