Mechili is a pocket-sized village in eastern Libya, known from historical records as a settlement of some age — the 9th-century Arab geographer al-Ya'qubi described it under the name Wadi Makhil as an established Islamic town with a congregational mosque, water cisterns, active markets, and fortifications. It sits in terrain close to mountains and within reach of water, and predates the Fatimid caliph al-Mu'izz li-Din Allah by over seven decades.
