Maxixe is the largest city and economic hub of Mozambique's Inhambane province, sitting on the Indian Ocean just south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Local ferries cross the bay to historic Inhambane City directly opposite, making the two cities closely linked despite the long road distance between them. Elevated to city status in 1972, Maxixe also sits on the country's main north–south highway, giving it a role as a transit point along the Mozambican coast.
