Marugame, in Kagawa Prefecture on Japan's Shikoku island, is defined by two things: its castle, which stands at the city's centre as its enduring landmark, and its traditional fan-making industry — Marugame uchiwa fans account for around nine in ten of all such fans produced across Japan. The city sits directly on the Seto Inland Sea, with mountains close behind, and serves as the main urban centre for the central and western parts of Kagawa.
