This Red Sea resort town in south-eastern Egypt, Marsa Alam is known for clear water and white sandy beaches, with a café and restaurant scene that is unusually rich for its size. Development began in 1995, driven by Kuwaiti investment, and accelerated after the opening of an international airport in 2003. The town serves as a base for diving, fishing, and boat trips, with a yacht marina and conference centre alongside its resort hotels, and mountains visible inland.
