La Grita

Venezuela

Andean valley town in Táchira state, Venezuela, La Grita draws large crowds each 5 and 6 August for the festival of the Santo Cristo de La Grita — a celebration significant enough that the town has been declared Venezuela's "Jerusalem" or sanctuary city. Colonial-style houses and open plazas fill the centre, while the surrounding mountains offer hiking, camping, and wildlife observation. Religious tourism peaks again during Semana Santa.
