This small town in Bulgaria's Eastern Rhodopes, Krumovgrad sits on the banks of the river Krumovitsa in the mountainous south of Kardzhali Province. Its name honours the medieval Bulgarian ruler Krum, meaning "city of Krum." The town has a mixed population of ethnic Bulgarians, Turks, and Romani people, and serves as the administrative centre of Krumovgrad Municipality.
